Why Mentoring is the next step for you

It’s easy to think when you start your career that you will stick at it for a few decades, maybe change your career path once or twice and then settle into a nice retirement of playing golf and visiting the grandchildren every week. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

But what if this isn’t all you want from retirement?

Why spend all those years learning and perfecting your professional skills and knowledge for it all to become obsolete when you hit 60? Seems like a waste of talent and time doesn’t. It doesn’t have to be.

If you ask yourself these questions then mentoring is for you. Mentoring is a great way to have an active retirement. Yes, you can go for walks, play golf and do a bit of tennis now and then but what about the brain? Your brain is the most important muscle in your body so why neglect it in retirement? Being a fit and healthy retiree does not only mean physically but mentally.

But I know what you’re thinking, I don’t want to go through more and more training to develop a new skill to keep my brain active in retirement, I want freedom. Unlike other mental activities such as chess and sudoku, mentoring is a skill you have been perfecting your whole life.

It is the one brain-stimulating activity you are already an expert in, all you have to do is translate your experiences and knowledge into someone else’s success.

Imagine how brilliant the human race would be if we all just shared our own success and knowledge to help others succeed and be a character in their story to share in their success. If settling in retirement is not for you, then mentoring is the answer.

Does the thought of being idle for days on end with nothing but the 6 o ‘clock news to entertain you, scare you?

Me too. So why not get active today, maybe you’re not the most physically active person and the thought of hitting a ball all day long don’t interest you, then exercise your brain instead.

Mentoring is all about being the knowledge pool for your mentees, whether it be a particular problem in the field ‘everyone goes through and have to figure it out for themselves or an employee your mentee just can’t seem to motivate and are at their wit’s end, be the light at the end of the tunnel for them. Show them the way, at the end of the day we all wish we had mentoring support in our early career so why not be that support now.

Choose your own hours. This is not a ‘9-5’ job that will leave you burned out at the end of the day with just about enough energy left to sit on the couch and watch tv, mentoring is what you make it, as little or as often as you want. Leaving countless hours for other activities while still releasing those good old endorphins. Sounds ideal, doesn’t it?

There are still opportunities to prolong your career in retirement, don’t let them pass you by. Achievement and success are not only reserved for the youths of today, mentoring can be the path to success and achievement in retirement.
