Ergonomic research, also known as human factors, plays a key role in the development of almost all products. It helps designers know how people will interact with an object on a physical level, what will be comfortable, and the subtle changes they can make to improve the experience.

Today, we’d like to talk about what a career in ergonomic research looks like as well as the different ergonomic specialist jobs you can do.

What Does the Science of Ergonomics Study?

Let’s start by breaking down what ergonomics actually is and why it’s so important. At its core, ergonomics is about evaluating the relationship between people and the products/environments they interact with. Usually, this is about physical interactions. Is a product comfortable to use? Could repetitive use lead to injury?

That said, some people study cognitive ergonomics. In some respects, this area has strong crossover with UX/UI design. The distinction between the two is mostly about perspective. UX tends to take a broad approach, covering all aspects of the experience, including long-term experiences like customer satisfaction and emotional connection. Cognitive ergonomics is all about short-term psychology. Does this make sense? Is this easy to understand? Does this feel intuitive?

When you get right down to it, both cognitive and physical ergonomics exist to answer a simple question: how do we make this easy for people to use? Or, to put another way, what is the human factor?

Whether you’re designing an office chair, a medical device, or even a mobile app, it’s very important to understand human needs and limitations. This is all the more true when designing for accessibility. Instead of making people adapt to flawed systems, human factors is all about building the systems around people.

How to Build a Career in Ergonomic Research

Most entry-level human factors jobs require a relevant bachelor’s degree. Ideally, you’d have a degree in human factors, but subjects like industrial engineering and industrial design are also great entry points.

If you’re looking to go straight into specialised research or high-level product design, then you’ll want to do a master’s degree or PhD. That said, it’s more than possible to start with just a bachelor’s and move into more senior corporate roles over time. It all depends on whether you’d rather have a more academic or experience-based background.

As for skills, the practical job of an ergonomic researcher is largely about data collection, user testing, and design. You’ll need a solid grounding in quantitative research. You’ll need to know how motion is captured and analysed, how muscles are tested, and how to perform force-measurement studies. On top of that, you’ll have to know how to conduct qualitative research. This means running observational usability studies, subject interviews, and task analysis.

For the design side of things, you’ll be expected to have a decent grounding in CAD (computer-aided design) and DHM (digital human modelling) to simulate physical interactions.

Lastly, you’ll be spending a lot of time with your head buried in regulations. OSHA standards and ISO ergonomics guidelines are the real boss where this field is concerned.

Jobs & Career Paths

A degree in human factors can take you a long way with many different career paths open to you. You could pursue physical product design, digital interfaces, or even corporate health.

Corporate roles, like office ergonomics research specialist or corporate ergonomist, focus largely on workplace safety. They conduct risk assessments, design injury-prevention programs for remote and hybrid teams, and consult on facility layouts to ensure employee wellbeing.

In manufacturing, aerospace, and consumer technology, jobs focus more heavily on product and R&D. Here, specialists work directly alongside industrial designers and software engineers to shape everything from automotive interiors and power tools to wearable tech and virtual reality hardware.

Salary levels vary across the industry but entry-level roles typically earn between $60,000 and $75,000 while senior human factors engineers can bring in $180,000 or more per year if they’re in the right industry.

Ultimately, human factors is an incredibly broad career path. Furthermore, it’s one of those fields that can take you into just about any industry and where experience can be highly transferable.
