5 Medical Careers That DON’T Require a Degree

Getting a job in healthcare doesn’t always mean spending years at university and accruing a massive pile of student debt. In fact, there are plenty of rewarding medical careers you can pursue without a degree that will still let you work directly with patients, support clinical teams, and earn a healthy income right away.
Healthcare Assistant
Healthcare assistants work on the front line of patient care in hospitals, GPs, and residential care facilities. Working alongside qualified nurses and doctors, HCAs ensure that patients remain comfortable, clean, and supported throughout their care.
Day-to-day work involves tasks like taking blood pressure/temperature readings, assisting patients with personal hygiene and mobility, and updating clinical records. If you’ve got good literacy skills and a compassionate mindset, then this is an excellent entry-point for a healthcare career. It’s also great experience if you plan to ultimately pursue a medical degree in future.
Decontamination Technician
The sterile services department (SSD) is the section of a hospital where equipment is cleaned, disinfected, and sterilised between clinical procedures to prevent healthcare-acquired infections.
Within the NHS, decontamination technicians are a particularly understaffed role with massive demand throughout the country, so finding work is not hard so long as you meet the entry requirements.
Although you don’t need a degree, it’s worth noting that you will be expected to complete a BTEC diploma in Healthcare Science Associate (level 4). That said, this is completed as part of an apprenticeship/training so you’ll be able to earn while you learn. All in all, it’s a far more affordable option for those looking to get into the medical field and make a real difference.
Pharmacy Assistant
While becoming a fully qualified pharmacist does require a degree, the requirements for a pharmacy assistant are far less strict. Working under a pharmacist, as an assistant you’ll be the first point of contact for patients picking up prescriptions and seeking over-the-counter advice for minor ailments.
Other duties include checking prescriptions, assembling and labelling medications, and managing stock levels.
Getting started is very simple, as you’re only expected to have standard secondary school qualifications. Once hired, your employer will often support you through further training and qualification while you earn a full wage.
Emergency Call Handler
We might not talk about them as often as doctors and nurses, but emergency call handlers are the first line of response for members of the public seeking urgent medical assistance. Working in large call hubs, call handlers have to assess patient needs at speed using computer-guided triage software.
This job can be incredibly stressful as it involves interacting with all types of people, almost always in situations of distress. The decisions you make can save or cost lives. While there is no official entry requirement, it’s worth noting that candidates with NHS experience are strongly preferred, particularly if they’ve worked in public-facing roles.
GP Receptionist
Speaking of which, if you’re looking for a slightly lower-pressure role, then you might consider working as a receptionist at a GP. As an entry-point to healthcare work, GP receptionist jobs are excellent because they give you broad insight into how the medical system works across multiple different services.
GPs are – as the name suggests – the most generalised point of contact for all healthcare needs. Your daily responsibilities can include anything from greeting incoming patients and handling telephone inquiries to helping book appointments, plan schedules, and even contact other types of healthcare provider.
While there can certainly be stressful days, as healthcare work goes, this is a fairly low-stress place to start that will nonetheless teach you what it’s like to work in a public-facing role. It’s also excellent for teaching you about the breadth of conditions and patient needs that healthcare providers are set up to assist with.
