How to Become a Pharmaceutical Research Scientist
Before becoming a pharmaceutical research scientist, you’ll need a life sciences degree. That could be something broad like biochemistry or microbiology, or you could take the more direct path and study pharmacology.
Once you’ve finished your degree, you’ll be able to apply for entry-level jobs such as lab technician or junior analyst. In terms of salary, these roles generally peak at around £30K. To move into more senior roles, you’ll need to do a postgraduate – a Master’s degree or a PhD. A PhD is generally preferable as it shows you’re able to plan and run a research project from beginning to end with in-depth knowledge of the relevant subject matter.
Of course, the academic credentials are only a part of it. As with all jobs, it’s experience that ultimately wins the competition. The more practical lab experience you can build up, the better, especially if that’s across a variety of research projects.
Is R&D a Good Career Choice?
In the UK, while it’s true that entry-level research roles rarely bring in more than £30K, salaries can go a lot higher once you’ve got the proper academic background and a decent basis of experience. As a senior project manager, it’s reasonable to expect to earn around £55K, and a small minority ultimately go on to earn as much as £80-90K.
As for the day-to-day, R&D is a fairly stable job with a consistent 9-5. It can be hard work, and it requires an extremely high level of academic skill and knowledge, but the rewards are more than worth it for many. Not only is it an interesting job that will have you constantly learning and pushing the boundaries of research, but it’s also an incredibly rewarding one.
