Finding good jobs that don’t need a degree can feel like an uphill battle. That said, the highest-paying jobs you can find without a degree often rival those that require one, so long as you know what to do and where to go.

When you’re first leaving school and considering whether or not to pursue higher education, a lot of people will tell you that you need a degree if you want to find a high-paying job. This advice is not only false, but it can also push people down a path that isn’t right for them. Some people thrive at university while others stagnate, and trying to push everyone down the same path causes far more harm than good.

So how can you find a good job without a qualification?

Unless you’re lucky enough to have an Aunt who’s a CEO or a friend who’s able to get you through the door early, the chances are you’ll need to start your career path at the bottom. That means minimum wage jobs.

It’s easy to look at minimum wage jobs as disposable – many companies certainly do. While there are a lot of dead-end minimum wage jobs out there, there are also some that will offer genuine advancement if you’re good enough and you’re willing to put the work in.

One classic example of this is retail. Most people working in senior retail positions started their careers working at a till or selling directly to customers. They took on difficult, low-level jobs and proved that they were good at what they did.

That’s not to say companies will always recognise your hard work. Many of these people also had to be willing to job hop, to be ruthless about only working for companies that were serious in their promise that advancement would come to the right candidate.

And it’s not just about job hopping in your field either. For all those who find success in retail, plenty also find it’s not for them. The best thing about the somewhat disposable nature of minimum wage jobs is that if one industry isn’t working out for you, you can always go and try another. You could try working in engineering, or go into the hospitality sector.

These jobs might not seem glamorous, but most of the top-paying jobs you can find without a degree are the roles you work your way into one step at a time.

Making Your Own Success

With all that said, if you don’t want to take the gamble on a company finally recognising your worth, there is another option.

Some jobs absolutely require degrees, but many fall into a grey area where experience can go a long way towards making up the difference. In fact, you won’t find many high-paying jobs without experience, even if you do have a degree. The good thing about this is that experience is absolutely something you can make yourself.

For example, you don’t need a degree in film studies to become a professional videographer. You can teach yourself all the basics from YouTube, and if you invest in good equipment and build a portfolio that proves your skills, you can get hired on the back of that. The same is true for graphic design, web development, and just about any other career that might require a portfolio.

Many companies will value that far more than a degree. Not only does it show that you’re highly independent and able to be successful without someone else guiding you, but it’s also a clear and concrete demonstration of your skills. A degree shows that somebody else thought your work was good, but a portfolio lets your work speak for itself.

The Best Job is the One You Love

It’s easy to think about your job in terms of monetary gain, but that’s not always the healthiest mindset. Whatever you choose to do, it’s going to take up the majority of your waking hours for all the most productive years of your life. It’s absolutely crucial, therefore, that you can find a job that brings you joy.

There are plenty of good jobs that don’t need a degree. Some will earn you a lot of income, and others won’t. We’re certainly not saying you shouldn’t set your sights high if money is important to you, but before deciding to pursue a career path, take the time to ask if the money is really worth it. If a job doesn’t bring you joy, then it’s probably not the long-term role for you.
