Step 2: Working With Mentees

For example, you may get an inquiry from someone who’s just started their first job in a role you have extensive experience of. They’re probably a great match who could really use your help and advise.

On the other end of the scale, you’ll have some inquiries from people with little to no experience at all. Some of them will be hard working and dedicated to building a meaningful career for themselves. Others may be naive or may underestimate the task ahead.

This is where the all-important first meeting comes in. First meetings are a chance for both parties to ask questions. You’ll get to find out what their expectations are and whether or not you’re a good fit.

From there, your Mentee can decide whether they’d like to schedule another meeting. Again, it’s important to remember that this is as much a chance for you to decide as it is for them. Is this Mentee a person you think you’d have success with? Does their mindset and approach fit yours?

Mentor/Mentee relationships are often long-term so don’t be afraid to be a little picky up front. It could pay off well in the long-run.

Step 3: Developing Your Mentees’ Skills

A common problem when it comes to part time work for retirees is that the work is unfulfilling. Nobody should have to spend their retirement doing work they don’t enjoy, especially not when there are people queueing up to learn from them.

Working with your Mentee, you’ll be able to guide them directly, showing them exactly what they need to know while cutting through the noise that will likely be surrounding them. After all, for people starting their career it can often be very hard to decipher the good advice from the bad. For those with years of experience under their belts, however, it’s a different story.

Step 4: Showing Them The Way
