Is becoming a voice actor hard? And how do you do it?

Voice acting, be it for cartoons or video games, is a fun and exciting job. Better yet, it’s one you can do almost entirely independently. In this article, we’ll be covering how to become a professional voice actor and how long it takes, as well as some tips for getting started.

Years ago, becoming a voice actor came with some unique challenges. You had to have the right connections. You had to live in the right locations or, if you wanted to work independently, you had to have access to your own professional-standard recording setup in a time when equipment was far more expensive and difficult to come by than it is now.

In 2026, anyone can become a voice actor so long as they have the skill and dedication. From audiobooks to animation to game work, there are more opportunities than ever before and more ways to connect with small independent teams who are willing to take a risk on someone with a little less experience.

Getting a voice acting job with no experience is hard, but the good news is that you don’t have to start with professional work. As with any creative discipline, building a portfolio in voice acting isn’t about having fancy qualifications or even being able to prove you’ve worked on major productions. If you want to land voice acting jobs, then the only thing you need to prove is that you can voice act.

Now that’s not to say professional experience isn’t valuable. If you can show that you’ve worked as part of a team, taken direction, and been part of a successful project, then that will certainly be appealing. But you don’t need all that to get your foot in the door.

To land your first role without a track record, focus on building a clear, targeted demo reel that highlights your range. Start with independent projects, fan dubs, and student films. Once you have a few solid pieces under your belt, you can start looking for paid work.

One very common way into the industry is audiobooks. Lots of indie authors invest in audiobooks as a way to bring their work to a new audience. While setting up your own at-home recording booth is expensive, audiobooks can pay well, especially if you can build a name for yourself within a genre niche.

Now it’s worth noting that audiobooks can also be very challenging, especially if you’re a first-timer. There are a lot of hours to get through, and even once you’re done with recording, there’s a lot of production to be done. Be prepared for your first audiobook to be a bit of a grind.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that voice acting can take time to develop as a skill. Even if you’re a natural, the more you do, the better you’ll get, especially if you’re willing to invest some time and money in acting and improv classes.

As independent careers go, voice acting is an excellent choice. It’s in demand, and it’s something you really can get into with minimal gatekeeping. That said, it certainly isn’t an overnight road to success.
