What Is a Software Architect?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A software architect is someone who handles the high-level design of a software project. In the simplest sense, while a software engineer is someone who writes code and works on low-level tasks, a software architect focuses on a broader scope. They design the structure, make decisions about which technologies to use, and coordinate the work of engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Software architects have always been important, but in 2026 their role is becoming increasingly central. Some experts even predict that architects may even replace lower-level engineers altogether in years to come. To understand why, we have to talk about the increasing role of AI in software engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While many industries have been highly cautious in adopting AI into mission-critical workflows, software engineering represents a major outlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI-generated code is now commonplace and has been for the last couple of years. Industry leaders like Microsoft<\/a>, Google<\/a>, and Epic Games<\/a> have all been very open about their use of AI code. At the same time, it\u2019s now easier than ever for software startups to reach a minimum viable product with far smaller team sizes, heavily supplemented by AI code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upshot of this is that there\u2019s far less demand for entry-level engineers. In the past, an architect might have handed tickets off to a team of engineers. These days it\u2019s not uncommon for one person to hand tickets off to an AI, effectively allowing them to do the work of a whole team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For businesses, this is beneficial in the short term because it means they can hire one experienced dev rather than a whole team. In the long run, however, many analysts fear that the software industry is creating a problem for itself. As some have put it, the industry is \u201ceating its seed corn\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Software Architecture VS Software Engineering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The seed corn problem is economic shorthand for the idea of an industry using up its long-term assets for short-term growth. Instead of sowing their corn for a future harvest, they\u2019re eating it now, leaving themselves with nothing left down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, junior engineers represent the seed corn. Juniors are an investment the industry has always made in growing its future talent. Juniors learn from seniors and ultimately grow to fill larger roles, often progressing from engineering to architecture roles. Put simply, if the industry stops hiring engineers, then who will be the architects of tomorrow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practically speaking, we can already see the answer to this question taking effect. As experienced senior developers are increasingly hard to come by, many companies end up hiring juniors with strong portfolios. While they\u2019re still hired as engineers, many of these engineers are increasingly expected to perform a role closer to that of an architect, overseeing more work in shorter timeframes as part of a smaller team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How To Become a Software Architect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In many respects, the difference between a software engineer and a software architect is about experience. No matter how the practical daily work changes, in terms of a job title, you don\u2019t become an architect without getting a few years under your belt as a developer. In general, you\u2019re expected to have at least five years’ experience before you\u2019ll be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, it\u2019s well worth gaining that experience. The average salary for a software engineer starts at around \u00a328K and rises to about \u00a360K with experience. The average salary for a software architect is around \u00a372K and can go significantly higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an increasingly AI-driven software landscape, the architect job title is highly valuable.
