For product design graduates with an interest in engineering it can also be a fascinating exercise in problem solving as you design within real world constraints like material cost and structural integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But where can you find careers in product design in 2026? And what\u2019s the best way to build a portfolio for designing consumer products? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designing Consumer Products<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Consumer product design is all about creating physical items meant for everyday personal or household use. This spans everything from kitchen appliances, power tools, and audio equipment to furniture, sports gear, and sustainable packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike pure industrial design, which is often very focused on heavy machinery and equipment, consumer goods design sits directly at the intersection of user experience, aesthetics, and mass manufacturing. A designer in this space must constantly evaluate how an object feels in the hand, how intuitive it is to operate, and how easily it can be produced thousands of times over on a factory assembly line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the daily work, it mostly comes down to ideation – lots of sketching – and CAD (computer aided design). You might also make physical prototypes to test out the ergonomic, aesthetic, and practical elements of your design. This is one of the most satisfying parts of the job and it really sets product design apart from other design focused roles like graphic design<\/a> or UI\/UX<\/a>. With physical products, you really get to feel that you\u2019re making something real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jobs Related to Product Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Picture a career in product design and you probably imagine an in-house designer. Perhaps they work for a major consumer electronics firm or a domestic appliance brand. While those roles do generally represent the majority of the sector, the underlying skillset is actually far broader than many graduates realise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the traditional side, industrial designers, CAD specialists, and packaging designers work for consultancies or original equipment manufacturers. These roles focus heavily on the physical form, the colour, and the material as well as things like the unboxing experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond standard product development, there are several less obvious applications for this training. Design researchers focus heavily on user testing, observing how consumers physically interact with the product. Surfacing engineers specialise in designing clean, production-ready geometry that is easy to fabricate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also become a manufacturing consultant, helping companies to tighten their existing product designs to make them more efficient to produce, store, and distribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Get into Product Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The standard route into product design is via a design or engineering degree – the more focused the better. That said, this isn\u2019t the kind of role where a degree is the only door to success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employers don\u2019t care about a degree if it\u2019s just a piece of paper. What they want to know is: can you do the job and do you have a portfolio of work to back it up? If you have any professional background in CAD modeling or furniture design, then that can also be very relevant experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where a degree is useful is in building your skills over a series of structured projects, learning from experts, and networking. Get to know the people in your class, go to events and interact with people from your industry. Take this time to learn as much as you can while building real connections that will help you get a job further down the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With all that said, we really can\u2019t stress enough how important your portfolio is. This is something you need to get right. Employers don\u2019t want to see nothing but polished, glossy renders of finished concepts. They want to see your actual problem solving process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A strong portfolio should show that you know how to solve real world problems within real world constraints. It should show you\u2019re someone who\u2019ll be able to come in and get to work without the need for months of on-the-job training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can even be good to show failed designs in a portfolio if it\u2019s part of telling a story. \u201cI did this but it didn\u2019t work, so here\u2019s what I changed,\u201d is exactly the type of sentiment employers love because it shows you can adapt and that you understand how to iterate based on problems and feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all, if you want to land a job in product design then 90% of your focus should be on the actual practical skills. Get good at CAD by crafting an excellent portfolio. Learn the software and the process well enough that, when asked to demonstrate your skills in an interview, you can pass any test they throw at you.
