Everyone seems to know everyone, and you\u2019re on the outside looking to break in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trick to breaking in is a combination of good strategy and persistence. You have to know where to be and who to talk to. That said, it\u2019s not always as difficult as it might seem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today we\u2019ll be sharing four tips to help you break through that early barrier. We\u2019ll be discussing which events to go to, how to get to know people, and the simple steps you can take to build more effective networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Attend Niche Industry Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generic business mixers can be helpful, but if you really want to meet the right people, you need to be attending targeted events. Look for niche marketing meetups and digital summits. These are the places where you\u2019ll meet people with shared goals and values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that every connection you make is important. Many people assume that networking is about getting to know specific people &#8211; people with lots of experience and access to resources. They also assume that they have to form close professional bonds, getting to know people on both a personal and professional level. Both of these assumptions are wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When studied by researchers, it\u2019s often been found that many weak connections are actually far more powerful than a handful of strong ones. It\u2019s often much more useful for a hundred people to know your name than for ten people to be passionately singing your praises.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This happens for a couple of reasons. First of all, weak connections are far cheaper to make than strong ones. It doesn\u2019t take long to share a name and some contact information. Make a good pitch or build a little rapport, and that short conversation will stick in their head. You don\u2019t have to invest that much time to be memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondly, people who are just starting out often have far more incentive to do favours for one another than people with pre-established networks. If you get the chance to help someone else out &#8211; put in a good word for them or even get them involved in a project &#8211; they\u2019ll want to return that favour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of that, people at your experience level are far more likely to have opportunities that are suited for you. When you\u2019re starting out, there\u2019s only so much use in getting to know people who work in the C-suite because even if they like you, they aren\u2019t always the ones responsible for sharing opportunities at your level. Not to mention, people tend to only reach those positions at the end of their careers, so the value they bring may not last that long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you build professional relationships with people at your level, in a big way you\u2019re investing in their future as well as yours. You\u2019re pitching in on the same team in the knowledge that, a few years from now, both of you will be more valuable to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Master Digital Networking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should go without saying in 2026, but digital networking should be at the core of your strategy. Social platforms and online communities offer a continuous, low-friction way to engage with the wider marketing industry without needing to attend physical meetups every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start by optimising your primary professional profiles so they clearly demonstrate your skills, recent work, and area of expertise. Rather than passively scrolling, engage with industry commentary by contributing thoughtful analysis to campaign breakdowns, market news, or strategy discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When reaching out to peers or senior figures directly, always send a personalised message referencing a specific piece of their work, an article they published, or a shared professional interest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Build Rapport Through Activities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every networking event is about standing around in a room, trying to start cold conversations. If you want an easier way in, look out for skill-sharing workshops, portfolio review nights, and the like. If there aren\u2019t many of these kinds of events in your area, you might even consider setting up your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it\u2019s a lot of work, reaching out in online groups is an excellent way to organise real-world meetups with people in the same position as you. It doesn\u2019t even need to be a super formal event &#8211; it\u2019s more about making an excuse to introduce yourself and get your name out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Always Follow Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This last one is super simple, but it\u2019s probably one of the most important rules in all networking, and particularly for marketing. Making an introduction is one thing, but following it up with a brief, personalised message within a couple of days is essentially a free win &#8211; especially if you can offer something genuinely useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you come across a good opportunity for someone, drop it in a message. Even if it\u2019s just a job listing, it\u2019s a way to get your name on their radar again and show that you\u2019re genuinely invested in helping one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the day, if you want your networking to be effective, then you have to remember to give more than you take.
