Looking for a future proof career? Worried that AI may represent a threat to your current job prospects?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making predictions about the future of the job market has always been dangerous. Technology is unpredictable as are the trends of economics and business interests. That said, the best future proof careers have almost always come from industries that combine long-term stability with massive growth potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this list, we\u2019ve tried to filter for just that, to help refine a list of industries that we believe will continue to be successful over the course of the next few decades. We\u2019ve also tried to select areas where AI will be limited in its utility, so that you can feel confident about stepping into an AI proof job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Immersive (VR\/AR) Technologies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The tech industry<\/a> has been in an interesting place for the last two decades. Where once it was major hardware developments that lead the charge, since smart-phones and tablets hit the market, those hardware developments have taken somewhat of a back seat to the flashy software they now enable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, just because social media, games, apps, and AI have been at the forefront of the zeitgeist, that hasn\u2019t stopped our hardware from growing ever more advanced. Although the fundamental technology hasn\u2019t changed, computers and microprocessors are now faster, smaller, and cheaper than ever before, opening up possibilities that might once have seemed the stuff of sci-fi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enter virtual reality, along with its younger sibling augmented reality. If you\u2019re into gaming, then you\u2019re probably quite familiar with VR headsets. Big, bulky, and a little cumbersome to use, they haven\u2019t so much exploded as crept into the mainstream over the last ten years, but in doing so they\u2019ve led the charge on developing a new and potentially transformative way of interacting with the digital space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, VR is a strong enough market within gaming to support itself but the potential for this technology goes far beyond just that one market. With companies such as Apple and Meta now pushing to expand the consumer cases for VR and AR, this is an industry that could bring countless new jobs in both hardware and software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only time will tell how successful this attempt at growth will be, but either way it seems that VR is here to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Renewable Energy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, you may be rolling your eyes at this second entry and if so we wouldn\u2019t blame you. If you\u2019re new to the job market then the chances are that renewable energy has been finding its way onto lists such as this one for longer than you\u2019ve been alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a step back however and you\u2019ll find that most of those predictions actually had a lot of weight to them after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most countries in the modern day – particularly wealthy, developed nations – now use many renewable energy sources to power a large minority (if not the majority) of their grids. Include nuclear in those statistics (which is not technically renewable but is far cleaner than fossil fuel alternatives) and you\u2019ll find that we\u2019re further along in our green transition than some headlines would have you believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is this? Well, to put it simply, renewable energy is cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the political will power on climate change may not always have been as strong as it ought to be, the financial desire for renewable energy is a powerful motivating force. Governments may be unwilling to invest in developing new energy technologies, but once those technologies exist, then they\u2019ll be more than happier to accept a cheaper alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of this to say that green energy was a future proof career 20 years ago and it will likely continue to be so 20 years from now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Trade Industries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From cutting edge technologies to edge cutting tools, carpenters, builders, plumbers, and electricians aren\u2019t going anywhere any time soon – not without serious developments in the field of robotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, over the last few decades as more people have gravitated towards white collar jobs, the demand for skilled trade workers has only gone up while the supply has gone down. You don\u2019t have to be an expert on economics to see that this massively increases the value of trade work in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, if you\u2019re looking for an AI proof career, you probably can\u2019t do better than this kind of physical, in-person labour. While we\u2019re on the subject, a similar logic can be applied to hospitality and healthcare, both of which are vital industries that cannot be automated away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
