We\u2019ll start with the elephant in the room: pyramid schemes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pyramid schemes have been around for decades at this point and it doesn\u2019t look like they\u2019ll be going anywhere any time soon. While most people can spot a traditional pyramid scheme – or multi-level marketing<\/a> enterprise as they\u2019re more likely to call themselves – recent changes to our working culture have made it easier than ever for some of these scammers to slip through the cracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In years gone by the idea of \u201cbeing your own boss\u201d and even just \u201cworking from home\u201d was, for many people, little more than a dream but as technology and workplace culture have caught up to us, that\u2019s no longer true. As such, where we might once have been suspicious of a job that sounded too good to be true, now it\u2019s far easier to let your guard down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said, there are some simple rules you can follow if you\u2019re wondering whether or not a potential opportunity is a pyramid scheme in disguise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First thing\u2019s first, ask yourself where the money is really coming from? The problem with pyramid schemes is that while they tell you that you\u2019re the seller\/marketer\/boss, in reality you\u2019re none of those things. To a pyramid scheme, you are the customer and their aim is to sell you as much product as possible. You can usually tell this is happening because instead of encouraging you to sell the product, they\u2019ll encourage you to recruit new people under you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put simply, if everybody is recruiting, then nobody is selling and that means all the money is coming from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many cryptocurrency scams can also be identified through a similar style of logic. Ask yourself where the money is coming from. If the answer is just \u2018people buying in\u2019 then the chances are there\u2019s no real value behind the product\/company. All the money is coming from you and all you\u2019re being sold is a dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By contrast, with any legitimate work from home side job, you should easily be able to identify the value of the product. It should be clear what people are buying and where the profit is coming from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a number of websites out there who market themselves on the premise that you can earn money by filling out surveys and studies. Although most of these are relatively harmless, in that all they want from you is information, it\u2019s worth noting that you\u2019re very unlikely to be able to make a living doing this kind of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is that filling out these surveys takes a lot of time relative to the small amount of money these websites actually pay. They sound persuasive because the work involved is relatively low effort, but time is money and, no matter who you are, your time is worth more than what these sites are ever going to pay you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freelancing & Side Hustles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking to start a side hustle<\/a> or become a freelancer, then the first thing you need to know is that you\u2019re walking into a wild west. There\u2019s plenty of great work out there but you need to know how to identify it. So what does a legitimate work from home side job look like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While freelance jobs and side hustles can vary a great deal, any job worth working should pay reasonable money for the time you put in. Or, to put it another way, if you\u2019re not earning minimum wage on the hours you work, then it\u2019s likely you\u2019re being ripped off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
